Ambroise Alexandre Chesnier Duchesne (1813-1871), son of François Xavier Alexandre Chesnier Duchense and Marie Angélique Brunet, both of Saintes, France, joined the French navy around 1826. After serving seven years he landed in New Orleans in 1833, and later moved to Ouachita (now Caldwell) Parish, where he bought land and settled. In this collection, the family name Chesnier Duchesne is also alternately spelled: Chesnier du Chesne.
Alfred W. Smith lived in Aurora, Illinois during the 1860s and wrote often to his mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Smith of Natchez, Mississippi.
