Historical Note: Furman B. Pearce (1878-1950) was a leader of the steamship industry in the Gulf region for forty-one years. He was southern manager of Norton, Lilly and Company from 1919 until 1949. He began his career in New Orleans with South Atlantic Steamship Line in 1908 until 1918 when he spent a year as general manager of the Steel Steamship Line. In the New Orleans Steamship Association, Pearce served on the executive committee and on legislative advisors and New Orleans and Gulf Waterways. Furman was President of the Louisiana Society of the Sons of the American Revolution and Vice-president of the National Society. He was a member and President of the Propeller, Boston, Louisiana, Recess, Round Table, and Traffic Clubs.
