Historical Note: Originally from Augusta, Georgia, the family relocated to New Orleans after John G. Dunlap, a merchant's agent, moves in hopes of improving his financial situation in 1844. He married Beatrice A. Dunlap, who died 1852. They had a son, John Bryson Dunlap. John G. Dunlap corresponded with Bertha van Nooten, a friend who moves to Java, then a Dutch colony in the East Indies. She expresses her opinions about Dutch clergy and the island's natives.
