Historical Note: The New Orleans Typographical Union No. 17 is a typesetters' union established in 1852 by one hundred and fifteen representatives of fifteen New Orleans printing offices. The union is meant to ensure fair wages, encourage an effective apprenticeship system, ensure the relief and burial of members, and elevate the profession as a whole. Gerard Stith, the foreman of the composing room of the New Orleans Daily Picayune and later mayor of New Orleans, was the union's first president. It is the oldest trade union in New Orleans and is affiliated with the International Typographical Union, the Louisiana AFL-CIO, and the Greater New Orleans AFL-CIO council.
