Swiss Society of New Orleans. | Tulane University Special Collections

Name: Swiss Society of New Orleans.

Historical Note: The Swiss Benevolent Society was founded in 1855. In 1859 it changed its name to the Swiss Society of New Orleans. It is one of the oldest Swiss organizations in the United States. Another name for this organization is the Swiss-American Society of New Orleans. Originally, the Society helped the needy among its members with medical care, including hospitalization, medication, and burial plots. Eventually, it also encouraged Swiss immigration to the United States, organized excursions back to Switzerland, and arranged social events for the New Orleans Swiss community.
