Historical Note: Judah P. Benjamin (1811-1884) was the Secretary of War and later Secretary of State to Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederate States of America. Prior to the Civil War, Benjamin was a member of the Louisiana House of Representatives. In 1852 he was elected by the state legislature to the United States Senate from Louisiana. He was the second Jewish senator in the United States Senate.
