Historical Note: Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826) was the third President of the United States and the principal author of the Declaration of Independence. During the Revolutionary War, he served in the Continental Congress, the Governor of Virginia, and later the United States Minister to France. He was the first Secretary of State and as President oversaw the purchase of the Louisiana Territory as well as the Lewis and Clark Expedition. He was married Martha Wayles Skelton and had six children. He died in 1826 at his home, Monticello.
