Thomas Claiborne (1749-1812) was a United States Representative from Virginia and father of John Claiborne (1777-1888) and Thomas Claiborne (1780-1856). William Charles Cole Claiborne (1775-1817), the first governor of Louisiana, was the son of Colonel William Claiborne and Mary Leigh Claiborne. Thomas Jefferson sent Mississippi Territorial Governor Claiborne to New Orleans to accept the transfer of Louisiana from France to the United States. Corinne Claiborne Boggs (b. 1916), wife of Hale T. Boggs (1914-1972) was United States Representative from Louisiana 1973-1991, United States Ambassador to the Vatican. She is the great-great-grandniece of John Francis Hamtramck Claiborne.
The Claiborne family is associated with the Dallas, Pell, and Boggs families.
