Alfred Mercier papers, 1831-1893 | Louisiana Research Collection

Scope and Contents: This collection consists of different journals and papers related to Alfred Mercier. One of these journals is an account of Mercier's trip to France and Algeria in 1879. He gives vivid accounts of the transatlantic voyage, southern France, and the Casbah. The other two journals are accounts of daily life in New Orleans, 1871-1891 and 1891-1893. They mention the weather, literary concerns, Mercier's medical practice, and activities with friends (Jules Gentil, Alcée Fortier, Charles Gayarré, and others) and social groups (such as l’Athénée Louisianais). Mercier's medical diploma, two letters, and a broadside extolling Mercier's literary work can also be found in this collection.
