Scope and Contents: This collection contains genealogical material, correspondence, deeds, wills, receipts, inventories, financial records, land surveys, executive orders, and military commissions. The collection consists of correspondence of the William L. Harris family and the papers of Edward Duffel (1754-1835) and his brother James Duffel; of Henry L. Duffel; and Dr. Edward Duffel, Jr., the son of Edward and nephew of James. Another Henry L. Duffel (1791-1867) received a number of official appointments, both judicial and military, from several different Louisiana governors. There are letters from William L. Harris and Thomas Benton Harris to their wives while imprisoned during the Civil War at Johnson's Island. Other families related to the Harris and Duffel families are represented in the collection, including the Seghers, Calvert, Claiborne, and Morrison families.
