Scope and Contents: The collection consists primarily of personal notes and letters to George R. Wendling (1845-1915). Correspondents include Robert J. Burdette, Wendell Phillips, David Davis, Eugene Field, Bishop T.U. Dudley, James Whitcomb Riley, Josh Billings, John Temple Graves, Guy C. Lee, William A. Sunday, William Jennings Bryan, Thomas Nelson Page, Jefferson Davis, Frederick Ward, Kate Field, Ross Crane, and others. There are also two land patents issued to Joseph F. Stephenson of Clark County, Virginia in 1839. Wendling was a scholar and lecturer of Washington, D.C.as well as a prominent attorney in Illinois. The collection also contains several of Wendling's manuscripts, including The Man of Galilee, The Hebrew Lawgiver, Stonewall Jackson, and The Bible in the Height of Today.
