Gulf Intracoastal Canal Association records, 1875-1985 | Louisiana Research Collection

Scope and Contents: This collection is made up of the organizational records of the Gulf Intracoastal Canal Association, which include correspondence, minute books, business records, brochures, pamphlets, photographs, membership letters, clippings, maps, photographs, convention material, and scrapbooks. The Association was organized in 1905 to promote the idea of a single channel that would connect all major Gulf coast ports. This idea materialized forty-four years later, with the formal completion of the Waterway in June, 1949. A significant engineering achievement, the Waterway's creation was made possible by the cooperative efforts of communities, legislators and government agencies. The Intracoastal Waterway is a 3,000-mile waterway along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of the United States.
