Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection consists of correspondence of Andrew Hynes while serving with Tennessee troops in the Battle of New Orleans campaign. The correspondence from Nashville mentions business, political and military affairs. Main correspondents represented in the collection include Willie Blount, Thomas Fletcher and William Hynes. Also included are printed orders, broadsides, roster of officers of the Tennessee army and map of the battlefield of the Battle of New Orleans during the War of 1812.

Biographical Note

Andrew Hynes was born 1786 December 22, in Bardstown, Kentucky. His father, Andrew Hynes, was one for the founders of Louisville, Kentucky. The younger Andrew Hynes moved to Nashville, Tennessee, in 1810 where he joined the state militia, and later served under General Andrew Jackson at the Battle of New Orleans. On 1814 April 5, Major Andrew Hynes was appointed Adjutant General of the state militia, and promoted to Colonel. After the war, he became a merchant in Nashville. He married Ann Erwin of Home Place Plantation, Iberville Parish, Louisiana, on 1817 March 2. Lavinia, one of their seven children, married Edward J. Gay, who was to become a congressman from Louisiana. While maintaining a home in Nashville, Hynes resided at Home Place with his wife and her parents, assisting in the management of the plantation. Andrew Hynes died at Home Place 1849 January 21.
