Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection contains correspondence, photographs, newspaper clippings, a thesis, and miscellaneous materials of Forrest E. LaViolette, a sociologist at McGill University in Canada. The materials focus primarily on LaViolette's study of various Japanese racial colonies in the United States and Canada during the early stages of World War II. Correspondence is from fellow sociologists, Japanese friends and representatives of Japanese organizations. The bulk of the collection is clippings are from various newspapers concerning the relocation of the Japanese, including the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, the New York Times, the Montreal Star, and the Montreal Gazette.

Biographical Note

Foresst E. La Violette was a sociologist a McGill University in Canada. He studied the various Japanese racial colonies in the United States and Canada during the early stages of World War II. He corresponded with other sociologists, Japanese friends, and representatives from Japanese organizations. His bachelor's degree thesis from Reed College in 1933 was entitled "Japanese Nationalism, A Social Study."
