Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection consists of papers of Benedict family members in the United States, from the early nineteenth century until the late twentieth century.  Included are school and personal papers, correspondence, home recipes and remedies, land ownership papers, photographs, certificates and diplomas including an 1879 pharmacy diploma from the University of Louisiana, an 1890 Tulane Law School commencement program, invitations, financial papers, clippings, maps, a small painting on wood, printed material, and other miscellaneous papers on various topics, held by Benedict family descendents in New Orleans, Louisiana, through 1974.

Biographical Note

The Benedict family came from Pennsylvania to Louisiana during the nineteenth century. Individuals connected to the family include: Ada V. Benedict Wright, Charles Wright, Alice Benedict Bres, Edward Bres, Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Benedict, Mary Ellen Benedict, and Julia Benedict. Alice Moise, a graduate of Newcomb College (1928), is a descendent of the Benedict family as well.
