Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Byrne family papers consists of correspondence, copies of deeds, photographs, genealogical research, and writings composed and gathered by Celeste Byrne. Celeste Byrne worked on a book project that documented 300 years of Byrne family history up until her grandfather's death in 1903.

Biographical Note

A prominent member of the Byrne family, John Lawrence Byrne (1835-1903), moved to the United States from Ireland. His grandfather, George Hillas, was a member of the Irish Parliament. John Lawrence Byrne lived in New Orleans and was part of the Confederate Army Reserve and later a comissioner of the Audubon Park Association beginning in 1891. His granddaughter, Celeste Byrne, was a New York fashion designer who retired to New Orleans and worked on writing a book covering three hundred years of family history to his death in 1903.
