Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection partially documents the relationship between the U.S. Coast Guard and the American Waterways Operators in a cooperative effort to improve marine safety and environmental protection. The collection, which focuses on the New Orleans region, contains meeting minutes, reports, clippings, regulations, posters, bulletins, speeches, annual reports, publications, a history of the American Waterways Operators, and project descriptions. Some of the subjects covered by the material in the collection include hazardous waste control, the New Orleans Vessel Tracking System, the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, locks, bridges, safety, Army Corps of Engineers projects, the Mississippi and Atchafalaya rivers, and natural disasters.

Biographical Note

The American Waterways Operators is the national trade association representing the owners and operators of tugboats, towboats, and barges serving the waterborne commerce of the United States. Established in 1944, the association's members operate throughout the United States on America’s rivers, canals, in its ports and harbors, on the Great Lakes, and on the Atlantic, Pacific and Gulf coasts. The relationship between the United States Coast Guard and the American Waterways Operators is a cooperative effort to improve marine safety and environmental protection.
