Scope and Contents of the Materials

The collection consists primarily of the business papers of John T. Hayward, including reports, notes, statistics, patents, patent applications, technical drawings, blueline prints, correspondence, legal papers, ledgers, and financial records. Hayward was primarily an engineer and inventor and spent much of his life in the oil industry. In the collection there are several court cases in which ownership of Hayward's patents is disputed by others. There is also a large amount of Hayward correspondence with his patent lawyer, R. Werlin.

Biographical Note

John T. Hayward was primarily a marine engineer and inventor and spent much of his life in the oil industry. In 1948, while working as chief engineer for Barnsdall Oil Company, he invented and designed the world's first movable offshore drilling barge for protected waters, the submersible Breton Rig 20. He is considered, as the designer of this rig, the father of the offshore mobile drilling unit. Hayward also collaborated with A. J. "Doc" Laborde on the design of the Mr. Charlie and the creation of the Ocean Drilling and Exploration Company.
