Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Schmidt family papers consist of correspondence, legal papers, ledgers, lettersbooks, journals, photographs, and diaries of Gustavus Schmidt and his son Charles Schmidt, prominent New Orleans lawyers. The correspondence and papers involve family matters as well as give an account of their law practices and cases, particularly the claims and successions of French citizens whose land was confiscated during the Civil War.

Biographical Note

The Gustavus Schmidt family was led by Gustavus Schmidt (1795-1877), a New Orleans lawyer, editor of the Louisiana Law Journal, author of several works on Civil Law, and a lecturer on Civil Law at the University of Louisiana. As a young man, he emigrated from Sweden, settled in New Orleans, and married Melanie Seghers. His son, Charles Edward Schmidt (1832-1891) was also a prominent New Orleans lawyer, married Leda Hincks. Their daughter Marie Louis Schmidt (1876-1961) married Huges de la Vergne.
