Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Grima family papers are made up of personal and business papers of Berthe, Félix, Alfred, and Edgar Grima, as well as other people whose business affairs they handled between the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The collection includes slave sale documents, land transactions, mortgage agreements, wills, tax receipts, succession suit material, business and personal correspondence, as well as financial ledgers genealogical material. Most papers created before the Civil War are in French.

Biographical Note

The Grima family began its prominence with a merchant and wholesale dealer by the name of Berthe Grima who worked with with small merchants upriver in St. Louis, Illinois, and Missouri. Félix, Alfred, and Edgar are a few of his descendents who were notaries and attorneys that handled the legal affairs of prominent New Orleanians.
