Scope and Contents of the Materials

The collection consists of a group of papers, correspondence, photographs, newspaper clippings (1949-1985), scrapbooks, and genealogical materials of two New Orleans families, the Artigues family of France and the Riecke family of Germany. Includes the complete service record of Jean Joseph Artigues (1848-1852), in the first Company of Workers of Artillery in Algiers and the Extra de l'Estafette. Also includes documents of conscript, birth certificates, financial documents, promissory notes, birth certificates and death notices.

Biographical Note

The Artigues family of France and the Riecke family of Germany both became established New Orleans families. The first Artigues brothers came to escort a shipment of wine and stayed. The others followed via Cuba and Mexico. Alice Berthe Artigues married Henry Sebastian Riecke who developed Riecke Cabinet Works and was associated with the Tulane Lumber Company.
