Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection consists primarily of correspondence of the Louisiana State Dental Society, a professional organization within the twelfth district of the American Dental Association. The Louisiana State Dental Society is comprised of eight districts located throughout the state. The collection includes lists of members who have paid their Louisiana State Dental Society and American Dental Association dues, acceptance and rejection letters of those appointed to various committees of the Louisiana State Dental Society, and letters welcoming dentists in the armed services back to civilian life and offering them assistance and any needed rehabilitation. Primary correspondents include officers of the Louisiana State Dental Society, including Julian S. Bernhard, Secretary; Louis A. Legett and Oscar J. Ory, Treasurers; Wallace M. Necaud President; and Colin A. McHardy, President-Elect. Included is the correspondence of the 8th District Dental Society reflecting the Society's opposition to the Wagner-Murray Bill (Senate Bill Number 1161), which proposed the socialization of several branches of the medical profession, including dentistry. The collection also documents the Society's commitment to the war effort as manifested by a letter from the Chairman of the American Dental Association asking Presidents and Secretaries of the State Dental Societies to adopt intensive programs to further the Fourth War Loan Drive, specifically, soliciting their fellow members to purchase War Bonds in 1944. The collection contains reports ranging from individual reports concerning the status of various districts to resolutions, reports, and duties of several state committees. There are also bills and receipts, financial aid applications, materials relating to annual meetings, and membership lists including applications for membership, lists of dentists belonging to the Society, various committees or those in military service.
