Scope and Contents of the Materials
Cancer Crusaders is a non-profit, all volunteer organization dedicated to raising money and awareness about cancer research. The organization was originally created in 1976 by Lynda Buring Mahana, who recognized the immediate need for more and better cancer research in New Orleans. She formed a small group of volunteers and they began Cancer Crusaders. Many of their original members were part of the American Cancer Society, but felt that not enough of the funds raised by New Orleans were benefiting New Orleans. Cancer Crusaders was officially incorporated in 1978 and since then they have raised over $2 million for cancer research. Cancer Crusaders focuses more on raising money for all types of cancer research. There is no emphasis placed on a single cancer, which allows the funds raised to be used for general cancer research. Louisiana has an extremely high incidence of cancer and the Cancer Crusaders feel strongly that the money raised in New Orleans should stay in the area. Therefore, all their profits from dues, donations, and fundraisers stay in the New Orleans area and are split evenly between Tulane Cancer Center and LSU's Stanley S. Scott Cancer Center. There are no administrative overhead costs associated with Cancer Crusaders because it is a volunteer-run organization. Many of the members and officers of this organization have been affected by cancer, either by being cancer survivors themselves or having family members affected by the disease. The hope of the organization is that someday cancer will be eradicated and become a disease of the past, like polio or smallpox.
