Scope and Contents of the Materials

The collection contains pamphlets, a bibliography, clippings, notes, galley proofs, photographs, negatives, and other materials used in researching the book, Louisiana's Art Nouveau: The Crafts of the Newcomb Style, written by Mary Irvine. There is also a card index box with references used for Louisiana's Art Nouveau. There are exhibition loan forms from the National Gallery, lists of Newcomb craftsmen, as well as Sadie Irvine material. Sadie Irvine was one of the most well-known designers of Newcomb Pottery.

Biographical Note

Mary E. Irvine is the sister-in-law of Sadie Irvine, and wrote Louisiana's Art Nouveau: The Crafts of the Newcomb Style with Suzanne Ormond in 1976. Sadie Irvine, also known as Sarah Agnes Estelle Irvine (1887-1970) was one of the most noted Newcomb Pottery designers. Irvine enrolled at Newcomb in 1902 and graduated in 1906. She was listed as an Art Craftsman from 1908-1929. From 1929 until her retirement in 1952, Irvine taught pottery design, embroidery, watercolor, drawing and design, bookplates, and block prints.
