Scope and Contents of the Materials

The collection consists of personal and business letters to John Smith Kendall from friends, family, and some former associates from the Times-Picayune. Correspondents include F.F. Thomas, Jr., editor of Far Afield, in which several of Kendall's poems were published; Paul E. Cox, an old Times-Picayune friend; Frederick Moore, author of With Japan's Leaders; Lucy Gray of Nashville, a cousin; Harnett Kane of New Orleans; Louisiana State University Press and Alabama Press; Representative Hale Boggs, and Senator Russell Long. There are also several typescripts of Kendall's works, including The Cathedral of St. Peter, The Roman Forum, Via Appia-Via Ostiensis, and his printed works, An Alphabet of Animals, The Beggar Maid, and A Debt of Honor. In addition, there are a number of bound volumes in English and Spanish.

Biographical Note

John Smith Kendall was Professor of Spanish at Tulane University and was, for several years, on the staff of the New Orleans Times-Picayune. He is the author of the three-volume History of New Orleans, The Golden Age of the New Orleans Theatre, and number articles. Some of his other works include The Cathedral of St. Peter, The Roman Forum, Via Appia-Via Ostiensis,  An Alphabet of Animals, The Beggar Maid, and A Debt of Honor.
