Scope and Contents of the Materials

The collection is made up of the historical and business records of Travelers Aid Society of Greater New Orleans. Included in the collection are the organization history, by-laws and constitution, purpose and function, organization and administration, minutes, financial information, reports, and correspondence. There are also cases, studies, conference material, publicity, newspaper clippings, ledgers, pamphlets, newsletters, account books, receipt books, and registers of cases.

Biographical Note

In 1908 an informal organization supported by membership and contributions was established to address the problem of white slave traffic by organized vice rackets. The Travelers Aid Society of Greater New Orleans was incorporated in 1913 by representatives of various church and civic organizations who recognized the need for assistance to travelers in New Orleans. From 1913 to 1934 the Society maintained a women's home where stranded women and girls were cared for temporarily. In 1935, at the recommendation of the Board, a staff of trained social workers was hired to work on emergency cases at train, bus and steamship terminals.

The emphasis shifted through the organization's history to aid the problems of people at a particular time. The basic purpose of all Travelers Aid services was and is to prevent or relieve the trouble that may befall a moving person.
