Biographical Note

James Kern Feibleman (1904-1987) was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. He began his career as a poet, short story writer, and novelist. Later, he became involved in the family business as an assistant manager of a New Orleans department store. Then, in 1930, he became vice-president and general manager of the James K. Feibleman Realty Company, Inc., and in 1954 was made a partner in the Leopold Investment Company. At the same time, Feibleman also had a number of notable literary connections, including Sherwood Anderson, William Faulkner, and Roark Bradford. These connections, coupled with a shortage of teachers during World War II, led to Tulane University hiring him as an assistant professor of English in 1943. In 1945, he joined the Department of Philosophy, and later became its chairman. He was W.I. Irby Professor of Philosophy at Tulane from 1968 to 1974. In 1974 he was appointed the first Andrew W. Mellon Professor in the Humanities at Tulane. In 1975 Feibleman was named Emeritus professor at Tulane, retiring in 1977. He died in 1987.
