Scope and Contents of the Materials

The collection contains correspondence and professional papers from Winston Lill's public relations work for the City of New Orleans as well as from his time as Staff Director for the Louisiana World Exposition of 1984. There is advertising material from photographer Frank H. Allen that Lill obtained while working for the New Orleans Public Service. There are also annual reports, speeches, and campaign material documenting his position as Assistant Director and then Director of Public Relations for the City of New Orleans during deLesseps S. Morrison's time as mayor. Lill was special assistant to Morrison when he became ambassador to the Organization of American States (1961-1963). Additional materials mark Lill's time as executive vice president of W.R. Smolkin and Associates and executive director of Total Community Action (1965-1969). The most diverse items in the collection document Winston Lill's experience as staff director for the 1984 Louisiana World Exposition.

Biographical Note

Winston Lill (1927- ) is a New Orleans native who attended Millsaps College, University of Havana, and graduated from Tulane University in 1949. His began his career in advertising and sales with New Orleans Public Services (1950-1954) until he became assistant director and then director of Public Relations for the city of New Orleans (1954-1961). Lill was then special assistant to Ambassador deLesseps S. Morrison to the Organization of American States United States Department of State (1961-1963). After Morrison's death, Lill was executive vice president of W.R. Smolkin and Associates, marketing consultants (1964) until he became staff coordinator, New Orleans Committee for Economic Opportunity Action and executive director of Total Community Action (1965-1969). He served on the Mayor's citizen committee for Louis Armstrong Park (1971-1973), New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundation (1972-1979), and represented Mayor Landrieu in citizen effort to secure World's Fair for Louisiana in 1984. He was staff director for the Louisiana World Exposition, Incorporated.
