Scope and Contents of the Materials

The collection consists primarily of personal correspondence and papers of the Weeks family of New Iberia, Louisiana. Much of the correspondence is that of William Glassell Weeks to and from his family, particularly his daughter Lilly Brupbacher Weeks. There are also materials relating to the family's land holdings of Weeks Island, which was obtained by David Weeks as a land grant from the Spanish government. Also included is genealogical material relating to the Weeks, Thruston, Glassell, Palfrey, Gorham, Magill, Conrad, Hall, Collins, and Swayze families. The collection also contains The Virginia Almanac, which was used as a journal by Charles Mynn Thruston to the Colony in 1766 as well as by William and/or David Weeks to record cotton prices and other accounts around 1816. There are also reminiscences about life in New Iberia, recipes, poetry, sheet music, newspaper clippings, programs and pamphlets, carnival and debutante invitations, and photographs.

Biographical Note

The Weeks family of New Iberia, Louisiana owned land on Grand Côte Island (now called Weeks Island), obtained by David Weeks (circa 1786-1834) as a grant from the Spanish Government. Families related to the Weeks family included the Thruston, Glassell, Palfrey, Gorham, Magill, Conrad, Hall, Collins, and Swayze families. William Glassell Weeks (1864-1958) graduated from Roanoke College, Virginia, and Tulane Law School (1888). He practiced law with his brother, Edward T. Weeks. He was a member of the Building and Loan Association, president of the Homestead League, a Mason, and a Rotarian. He was also a Louisiana pecan grower and owned land developed for oil. His youngest daughter, Lilly Brupbacher Weeks, married Lee Davidson McLean and moved to the New Orleans area, where Lee McLean practiced medicine. David Weeks was a wealthy sugar planter with seven plantations centered around New Iberia, including one on Weeks Island, and one called Town Farm in New Teche. The last owner of Shadows-on-the-Teche was William Weeks Hall (1894-1958), an accomplished artist who had many acquaintances, including musicians and movies stars.
