Scope and Contents of the Materials

The collection is primarily made up of correspondence of James H. Dakin and his family. Dakin was a prominent architect who designed many significant structures in New Orleans, including the University of Louisiana during the mid nineteenth century, which would later become part of Tulane University. There is an 1843-1845 minute book of the Louisiana Volunteer Regiment kept by Dakin. Also included is reference material used by author Arthur Scully, Jr. to write James Dakin, Architect-His Career in New York and the South.

Biographical Note

James Harrison Dakin (1806-1852) was a prominent architect that designed many significant structures in New Orleans, including the University of Louisiana during the mid-nineteen century, which would later become part of Tulane University. He worked with James Gallier on Christ's Church and St. Patrick's Church in New Orleans. Dakin was the colonel of the Louisiana Volunteer Regiment during the Mexican-American War. He is one of the founding members of the American Institute of Architects.
