Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection consists of correspondence, family papers, photographs, travel diaries, clippings, and personal papers. In addition to Ellen Elizabeth Latrobe Wilson's service in the Navy during World War II, she was also very active in her community. She was president of the Independent Women's Organization during the 1960s, which is represented in the collection by correspondence, minutes, election material, press releases, and membership material. In addition, Wilson was also a board member of the Children's Bureau; director of the Fashion Group of New Orleans; and president of St. Mary's Dominican College Associates. The papers of her grandmother, Virginia Latrobe are also included in the collection, as is correspondence between Wilson and her husband, New Orleans architect Sam Wilson.

Biographical Note

Ellen Elizabeth Latrobe Wilson (1919-1991) was born in Baltimore, Maryland and lived in New Orleans for forty years. She was the granddaughter of Ferdinand Latrobe, seven-time mayor of Baltimore and great-great granddaughter of Benjamin Henry Latrobe, the architect of the United States capitol. She was married to New Orleans architect Sam Wilson (1911-1993). She served in the Navy during World War II. During the 1960s she was the president of the Independent Women's Organization. In addition, Wilson served as a board member of the Children's Bureau, director of the Fashion Group of New Orleans; and president of St. Mary's Dominican College Associates. She was a member of Louisiana Landmarks Society, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the Society of Architectural Historians, the Louisiana Historical Association and the Associates of Maison Hospitaliere.
