Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection consists of notes about voodoo taken from New Orleans newspapers and city records. The notes are on the celebrations of St. John's Eve (John the Baptist's Day), African-American and Creole superstitions, voodoo charms, and events in which voodoo was suspected. Also included are the death dates of members of the Laveau and Glapion families as well as a newspaper account of the death of Marie Laveau. There is also information about the death of General Andrew Jackson.
