Scope and Contents of the Materials

The collection consists of manuscripts, correspondence, notes, newspapers clippings, sketches, political cartoons, drawings, paintings, and writings that reflect Albert Caruthers Phelps' career as a journalist. He was an editorial writer for the New Orleans Item, New Orleans Picayune, and the Times-Democrat. He also published his political cartoons and the collection includes both printed cartoons and original sketches. In addition to articles in leading national magazines and newspapers, he also authored the book, Louisiana, a Record of Expansion (1905).

Biographical Note

Albert Caruthers Phelps (1875-1912) was born in New Orleans to Albert Gallatin Phelps, who ran a grocery, wine, and liquor shop at 154 Prytania on the corner of Felicity Street, and Annie Caruthers, the daughter of Charles Caruthers, a cotton merchant. While a freshman at Tulane University, he began to write for the Evening Post of New York. Later he was an editorial writer on the New Orleans Item, New Orleans Picayune, and Time-Democrat. He also published his political cartoons. In addition to articles in leading national magazines and newspapers, he also authored the book, Louisiana, a Record of Expansion (1905).
