Scope and Contents of the Materials

The collection consists of the personal papers of Robert G. Polack as well as his collection of early New Orleans and Louisiana-related manuscripts. The personal papers include correspondence, newspaper clippings, certificates, printed materials, speeches, materials used during a judicial campaign, and family papers, particularly those relating to the Lemann family. There are also drawings, prints, maps, and photographs. The manuscripts collection includes petitions, land grants, correspondence, passports, military appointments, and executive orders. Figures represented in these materials include Lieutenant Colonel Pedro Rousseau, Francisco Rendón, Reverend Mothers of the Ursuline Order, Pedro Ignacio Cowley, William C.C. Claiborne, James Mather, and Charles Derbigny. Also included in the collection are facsimiles of letters, a treaty, and a broadside relating to the Louisiana Purchase, the Civil War, and the Battle of New Orleans.

Biographical Note

Robert G. Polack was a lawyer and former president of the Louisiana State Bar Association (1970-1971). He also collected eighteenth and nineteenth century manuscripts relating to New Orleans and Louisiana history. A graduate of Tulane Law School, Polack also campaigned to be a judge at one point in his career. Polack was an active Freemason, serving as Master for Linn Wood Lodge No. 167 F. & A.M. in 1961.
