Scope and Contents of the Materials

The collection consists forty-one letters, thirty-nine of which are from Paul Claudel to Eve Francis. Paul Claudel (1868-1955) was a French poet and dramatist and Eve Francis (1896-1980) was an actress. They had been friends since Francis had first played the part of Sygne de Coufontaine in the creation of "L'Otage." The correspondence deals with Francis' life, which Claudel finds lacking in religious faith, and with the staging and interpretation of various plays by Claudel.

Biographical Note

Paul Claudel (1868-1955) was a French poet, dramatist, and diplomat. He was closely associated with the actress Eve Francis, who had been first to play the part of Sygne de Coufontaine in the play, "L'Otage." He was most famous for his verse dramas, which often convey his devout Catholicism. Claudel also had a career in the French diplomatic corps that began in 1893 and ended in 1936.
