Scope and Contents of the Materials

The collection contains correspondence, business papers, photographs, clippings, spoken audio recordings, souvenir albums, diplomas and other personal documents of members of Denègre and other related families, including the Gayle, Baldwin, Bayne and Jones families. There is also genealogical research, correspondence, photographs, newspaper clippings and other documents of various branches of the Denègre family. Much of the research presented in the 2008 accretion was compiled by George Denègre and appears as his unpublished manuscript entitled Three Grandfathers, included in the collection.

Biographical Note

The Denègre family is connected to several other families, including the Baldwin, Bayne, Gayle, and Jones families. Joseph Jones, M.D. (1833-1896) of the Jones family of Liberty County, Georgia, settled in New Orleans when he was appointed Chair of Chemistry and Clinical Medicine at the University of Louisiana (now Tulane University) after the Civil War. Thomas Bayne Denègre (1911-1915) was a grandson of Jones and attended Tulane Law School and practiced law in New Orleans. Born to Stanhope Jones (1860-1894) and Amelia "Minna" Bayne Jones (1868-1893), Denègre and his sister went to live their aunt Edith Bayne Denègre (1863-1936) upon their parents' death, taking the Denègre name in the process.
