Scope and Contents of the Materials

The New Orleans Religious Society of Friends was founded in 1945. The first meeting was inspired by a Quaker couple, the Binfords, on a visit to New Orleans. All members of the wider Quaker fellowship in the vicinity were called together. They formed the New Orleans Fellowship of Friends which met monthly at the YWCA for a short program of business and music. This collection consists of minutes, correspondence, financial records, marriage and membership information, budgets, newsletters, and materials from other Friends' organizations. In addition, there is a significant number of materials about the regional South Central Yearly Meeting (1958-1969), including correspondence and minutes because the local committee was making special arrangements for the meeting in 1966.There are materials from the American Friends Service Committee, the Friends Committee on National Legislation and the Friends World Committee for Consultation.

Biographical Note

The New Orleans Religious Society of Friends was founded in 1945. The first meeting was inspired by a Quaker couple, the Binfords, on a visit to New Orleans. All members of the wider Quaker fellowship in the vicinity were called together. These people were from pastoral Friends meetings and had found other churches to attend in the vicinity. They formed the New Orleans Fellowship of Friends, which met monthly at the YWCA for a short program of business and music. There were no indigenous Friends in Louisiana, so the growth of the Meeting was dependent upon people moving to the city from elsewhere. Attendance at Meetings began to grow as additional families joined the group. In 1947, two members of the Fellowship Council came to organize the Monthly Meeting. Peace, education, the clothing drive and adult discussion groups were the principal concerns in the early years. The Society began the First Day School in 1952. Issues of the draft and the Vietnam War came to the forefront. In New Orleans, the Society followed the traditional format of Quaker Meetings for Business, established in the 17th century, and other types of committees within the larger organization.
