This collection consists of the professional papers, correspondence, military records, drawings, slides, and other documents primarily concerning the medical and teaching career of Patrick H. Hanley, prominent New Orleans proctologist and surgeon. The collection also includes papers pertaining to his wife, Dr. Jeanne C. Roeling Hanley.

Biographical Note

Patrick H. Hanley was born in Lockport, Louisiana, in 1909. He graduated from Southwestern Louisiana Institute in 1929 and the Tulane University School of Medicine in 1933. During World War II, Hanley served as a lieutenant commander in Bahia, Brazil, where he devoted himself to disease prevention and health education. After the war, he returned to New Orleans, eventually achieving the position of Emeritus Professor of Surgery at Tulane School of Medicine and Emeritus Chair of the Department of Colon and Rectal Surgery at Ochsner Clinic. He served in a leadership role in the medical community and received numerous awards for his pioneering work in audiovisual programming as a medical teaching tool. His wife, Jeanne C. Roeling Hanley, was also a physician. They had one daughter, Jeanne Hanley Rabig.
