Scope and Contents of the Materials

The collection consists of the pension papers of Edward Kane Stickle, Union veteran of the Civil War (Private, Co. H, 118th NY Infantry Volunteers) and his widow Esther Bates Stickle. Also included is a letter, marriage certificate, and photograph.

Biographical Note

The Stickle family was from Waupun, Wisconsin. Edward Kane Stickle and Esther Bates were married 1862 March 26. Edward served in the 118th New York Infantry Volunteers during the Civil War and was injured by sun stroke. The family tried for years to receive the proper pension for Edward's illness, and finally had it approved in 1903 in Esther's name due to Edward's death the year before.
