Scope and Contents of the Materials

The collection consists of the Revolutionary War journal of Colonel William Smith (1752-1800); correspondence among various family members, including those who fought in the American Civil War; land patents; surveys; receipts; suits; and a land grant issued by Virginia Governor Patrick Henry.

Biographical Note

William Smith (1752-1800) was born 1752 November 15 and served as an officer in the Continental Army. His diary describes the war and his trip to inspect his land grants in Kentucky. His son was Edward Warren, born 1799 November 1 and his daughter was Minerva Smith Pullen, born 1832 January 30. Her great granddaughter is Margaret Pullen Munson.
