Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection contains the personal papers of Benjamin Bernard Weinstein, including biographical material, correspondence, typescripts of medical writings and other records of medical societies with which Weinstein was affiliated. Also included are newspaper clippings, bookplates, and photographs.

Biographical Note

Benjamin Bernard Weinstein, New Orleans physician, was the son of Jacob Weinstein and Nellie Salomon. He was born in New Orleans on August 25, 1913. He attended Boy's High School (1930), received his bachelor's degree from Tulane University (1933), earned his medical degree from Tulane Medical School, (1937), and a master's degree in gynecology (1940). He taught anatomy and gynecology at Tulane University School of Medicine from 1937 to 1952. A specialist in fertility research, he supported international perspectives on his specialties and profession. He supported the appreciation of literature and medical history, and was active in Jewish organizations. He died in his New Orleans on May 10, 1974. He is memorialized through the annual Benjamin Bernard Weinstein Lecture in the History of Medicine at Tulane University Medical Center.
