Scope and Contents of the Materials

Diary covering David W. James' service in the 56th Ohio Infantry from 1863 August 24 to 1864 May 26. The 56th Ohio participated in the Teche Campaign and the Red River Campaign. The collection includes entries from Camp Carrollton, Berwick Bay, Bayou Teche, Opelousas, Vermillionville, New Iberia, Camp Algiers, Madisonville, Franklin, Alexandria, Natchitoches, Mansfield, and New Orleans. The collection also includes photocopied supporting documents.

Biographical Note

David W. James was twenty-five years old at the time he enlisted into the Union Army during the Civil War. He served in the 56th Ohio Infantry from 1863 August 24 to 1864 May 26. The 56th Ohio participated in the Teche Campaign and the Red River Campaign. During his time in the Army, he visited the following locations: Camp Carrollton, Berwick Bay, Bayou Teche, Opelousas, Vermillionville, New Iberia, Camp Algiers, Madisonville, Franklin, Alexandria, Natchitoches, Mansfield, and New Orleans.
