The biography, written by Ray M. Thompson, is about the life of Albert Baldwin Wood (1879-1956), who was a prominent engineer and executive with the New Orleans Sewerage and Water Board. He designed the pumps for the drainage system for the city. In 1939 he was named head of the Sewerage and Water Board and held that position until his death.

Biographical Note

Ray M. Thompson wrote a biography of Albert Baldwin Wood (1879-1956) during the 1960s. Wood was a graduate of Tulane University's College of Engineering (1899) and was hired initially as Assistant Manager of Drainage by the New Orleans Sewerage and Water Board in 1899. In 1939 he succeeded Alfred F. Theard as head of the Sewerage and Water Board, a position that he held until his death in 1956. Wood also designed pumps for the drainage of the City of New Orleans. Wood also consulted and designed the drainage, pumping, and sewage systems for other locations, including Chicago, Milwaukee, Baltimore, and San Francisco, as well as projects in Canada, Egypt, China, and India. An avid sailor, he owned the sloop, Nydia, which he bequeathed to Tulane University for preservation.
