Scope and Contents of the Materials

The collection consists of a letter from Thomas Jefferson, Monticello, to M. duPlantier, New Orleans dated 1808 September 24. The letter concerns the lands owned by the Marquis de Lafayette near New Orleans and Jefferson suggests a loan to pay for the drainage of the property. The other supporting materials in the collection include a letter from Mrs. L. Dolhonde, New Orleans, to Frank Howard, donating the Jefferson letter to the Howard Library, as well as a print of Jefferson, as well as a calling card of Mrs. Dolhonde.

Biographical Note

Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826) was the third President of the United States and the principal author of the Declaration of Independence. During the Revolutionary War, he served in the Continental Congress, the Governor of Virginia, and later the United States Minister to France. He was the first Secretary of State and as President oversaw the purchase of the Louisiana Territory as well as the Lewis and Clark Expedition. He was married Martha Wayles Skelton and had six children. He died in 1826 at his home, Monticello.
