Scope and Contents of the Materials

The collection is made up of correspondence, lectures, reviews of lectures, student correspondence, recommendations, poems, essays, manuscripts, publishing contracts, clippings, scrapbooks, autobiographies, bibliographies, financial records, off prints, a photo album, and other papers. Margarete Bieber was named a visiting professor at Columbia University in 1936 and by 1937 became Associate Professor of Fine Arts and Archaeology at Columbia until her retirement in 1948. There are numerous book-length manuscripts written after 1951 in the collection as well as a large amount of scholarly correspondence.

Biographical Note

Margarete Bieber (d. 1876) was a Classicist, archaeologist, art historian, and academic. She was the head of archaeology department, Hessische Ludwigs-Universität Giessen and later Associate Professor of Fine Arts and Archaeology, Columbia University. As a writer, she also used the pseudonym Ingeborg Bergen. Bieber is the author of numerous works, including Ullstein Lexicon, Laocoon, The Sculpture of the Hellenistic Age, History of the Greek and Roman Theater, Alexander the Great in Greek and Roman Art, and other papers, Ancient Copies Contributions to a History of Roman Sculpture, and Continuation of Ancient Copies Contributions to a History of Roman Sculpture.
