Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection is made up of the organizational records of the Gulf Intracoastal Canal Association, which include correspondence, minute books, business records, brochures, pamphlets, photographs, membership letters, clippings, maps, photographs, convention material, and scrapbooks. The Association was organized in 1905 to promote the idea of a single channel that would connect all major Gulf coast ports. This idea materialized forty-four years later, with the formal completion of the Waterway in June, 1949. A significant engineering achievement, the Waterway's creation was made possible by the cooperative efforts of communities, legislators and government agencies. The Intracoastal Waterway is a 3,000-mile waterway along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of the United States.

Biographical Note

The Gulf Intracoastal Canal Association was organized in 1905 to promote the idea of a single channel that would connect all major Gulf coast ports. The Association was organized to provide a link between Gulf Coast businesses and deepwater ports; name variations include Intracoastal Canal Association of Louisiana and Texas. This idea materialized forty-four years later, with the formal completion of the Waterway in June, 1949. A significant engineering achievement, the Waterway's creation was made possible by the cooperative efforts of communities, legislators and government agencies. The Intracoastal Waterway is a 3,000-mile (4,800-km) waterway along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of the United States. Some lengths consist of natural inlets, salt-water rivers, bays, and sounds; others are artificial canals. It provides a navigable route along its length without many of the hazards of travel on the open sea.
