Fowler, Byrd D. | Tulane University Special Collections
Name: Fowler, Byrd D.
Historical Note: Byrd D. Fowler was born in Galveston, Texas, and moved to New Orleans during childhood, around 1889. For most of his life he worked as a trade school teacher in New Orleans. He was married to Lillian Kirst Fowler for over sixty years; they had a son and a daughter. During World War II, he wrote voluminously to his former students, offering them moral support, and encouraging them to write back to him about their experiences. These soldiers were members of several different branches of service, stationed at various places around the world, from the South Pacific to Europe, and also on bases in the United States. Upon donating the collection to the Howard-Tilton Memorial Library, he said, "This is history written by the men who made it; it has a right to be preserved." Fowler died at the age of 83 in New Orleans on May 9, 1964.
