Historical Note: The American Waterways Operators is the national trade association representing the owners and operators of tugboats, towboats, and barges serving the waterborne commerce of the United States. Established in 1944, the association's members operate throughout the United States on America’s rivers, canals, in its ports and harbors, on the Great Lakes, and on the Atlantic, Pacific and Gulf coasts. The relationship between the United States Coast Guard and the American Waterways Operators is a cooperative effort to improve marine safety and environmental protection.
