Historical Note: Elizabeth Wisner (1894-1976) was the Dean of the Tulane School of Social Work. She received her bachelor's degree from Newcomb College in 1914, her master's degree from Simmons College, and her doctorate from the University of Chicago. Wisner was appointed assistant professor in the department of sociology at Tulane University in 1933. After her retirement in 1958, she devoted her time to writing about social welfare in the South, the first work of this kind which showed how the South's distinctive socioeconomic conditions shaped social welfare needs.
