Historical Note: John Smith Kendall was Professor of Spanish at Tulane University and was, for several years, on the staff of the New Orleans Times-Picayune. He is the author of the three-volume History of New Orleans, The Golden Age of the New Orleans Theatre, and number articles. Some of his other works include The Cathedral of St. Peter, The Roman Forum, Via Appia-Via Ostiensis,  An Alphabet of Animals, The Beggar Maid, and A Debt of Honor.
